The AIS provides specialist advice and assistance to independent schools in the area of Languages. This includes consultancy support and the administration of government funded language programs and initiatives.

Funding for the School Languages Program and the National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools Program (NALSSP) is provided by the Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

Independent schools can apply for language grants to undertake programs in their schools that will improve the learning outcomes of students who are learning languages other than English including Asian, European, Indigenous languages and Auslan.
