In school sectors in Australia and across the Western world concern is being expressed that there is a decline in the number of teachers aspiring to positions of leadership. To address this challenge and to meet the increasingly complex practical needs of the leaders in independent schools, the AIS has established the Independent Schools Leadership Centre (ISLC).
Activities of the Centre
The activities of the newly established Centre are designed to ensure that future leaders of independent schools are educators who possess the managerial skills, including effective delegation, to confidently and successfully undertake the wide range of functions expected of them. It is important that future school leaders continue to be those with the educational vision that underpins the core purpose of the organisation and that these leaders are confident in their ability to supervise the undertaking of all the leadership and managerial aspects of the complex business that is schooling in the 21st century.
The ISLC is expanding its range of services in 2008 to include a suite of programs designed to support the practical leadership needs of school executive middle managers and bursars working in AIS member schools. Non AIS member schools are invited to attend the bursars’ program which is presented in association with the NSW Bursars’ Association. The programs are offered within timeframes to suit the needs of participants and the content has been informed by the latest evidence from the available literature, with a strong focus on the practical needs of the target audiences.
