Professional Development Minimize

The AIS professional development program comprises a wide range of high quality courses and conferences designed to meet the needs of school executive and teachers in AIS member schools.

In 2006 the program delivered 200 courses to 4785 participants, the majority of whom were from AIS member schools. The program also conducts a significant number of customised professional development sessions in individual schools at the request of school principals and their senior staff.

Member schools are able to access AIS professional development at a significantly discounted cost. In addition, in non-metropolitan locations member schools are offered individual school professional development sessions without additional travel or accommodation expenses.

The program is planned and largely delivered by a team of AIS consultants and volunteer convenors, led by the Director: Professional Development. The nature of the program is guided by the member school principals and senior staff who make up the AIS Primary and Secondary Professional Development Advisory Committees. Where possible, activities build on the expertise of AIS consultants, convenors and teachers in member schools gained through the conducting of action learning projects in funded programs.

The program relies heavily on the generous contribution of a significant number of AIS member schools. In a spirit of contribution to the community, member schools volunteer the professional time of many teachers to the convenor roles and their committee structures. In addition, many offer to have AIS courses and conferences take place within school grounds.

The structure and size of the program is unique in the education community in Australia and represents a valuable capacity building resource for AIS member schools.
