 What's New in Pastoral Care?

  • Changes to the use of spacers for asthma medication
Effective immediately, Asthma Foundation NSW will be adopting the policy of single-person use spacers. If a spacer or mask touches someone’s mouth then, unless you can autoclave it, only that person should use that spacer and mask again. This avoids infection transmission via mucus. This means that best practice for infection control is that all spacers are to be used by one person only, and should not be washed or in any way cleaned and reused by another person. This applies across all settings and all uses of spacer devices, including Asthma Emergency Kits, training courses and clinical settings. This has no impact on the use of personal spacers by individuals- the washing and use instructions remain the same. The changes will be implemented in each Foundation across Australia gradually throughout 2012.
