 Assisted School Travel Program

The Department of Education and Training has an Assisted School Travel Program which aims to assist eligible students with disabilities to access educational services in government and non-government schools. The service is for those students who may not otherwise be able to access education without the provision of transport assistance.

This program provides transport to and from the student’s place of residence and school. The service is designed to support the individual travel needs of students with disabilities. The level of support provided is tailored to meet the assessed individual travel support needs of students and may include full or part time transport assistance, additional supervision, support and assistance in meeting health care or behavioural needs whilst travelling, or assistance for students to develop skills leading towards independent travel.

The Assisted School Transport Program is provided at no cost to families, and accordingly, stringent eligibility criteria are in place to determine whether or not a student requires access to this specialised service in order to access education.

For a student to be eligible to access assisted school travel, parents and carers are required to clearly demonstrate that they are unable to provide or arrange transport for the student either fully or in part.  Each application is assessed using a consistent set of eligibility criteria to ensure equity of access.  The assessments are based on the needs of the student and the circumstances surrounding the ability of the parents/carers to provide or arrange transport to get their child to and from school as well as the travel time and distance considerations.
