Positive Partnerships has been developed as part of a Federal Government Initiative to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families. More specifically, Positive Partnerships is targeted at school age students, assisting schools and families to work together to promote the maximum participation of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders both socially and academically in the school context.
Positive Partnerships has been developed and delivered nationally by the Australian Education and Training Consortium (AATEC), in consultation with the State, Catholic and Independent Education sectors. The project provides information workshops for parents and carers and professional development for school staff.
Workshops have been held in regional and metropolitan areas throughout NSW since late 2009. Each component consists of intensive face-to-face sessions as well as access to online learning modules, resources and interactive discussion boards. The professional development workshops include an on-line training requirement together with four face-to-face training days.
There is no cost for school personnel to attend the workshops and accommodation costs are also covered if required.
In 2011 it is anticipated that four professional development and six parent/carer workshops will be held. School principals will be contacted by the AIS regarding workshops to be held in their area during 2011, or they may contact Cate Pinnington (02)9299 2845 to express their interest. Schools are also invited to go directly to the website to access the online learning modules and resources at www.autismtraining.com.au
