 Student Wellbeing

The AIS provides a wide range of services and assistance for schools in the area of student wellbeing, the main areas of which are described below.

Legislation

A significant number of different pieces of legislation exist that relate to the need for schools (and other agencies) to cater for the health, welfare and wellbeing of children.  You will find details about the relevant legislation in several places on this website, including the Child Protection, Risk and Compliance and Government Regulations (see 'Sharing Student Information', 'Attendance' and 'Disability Discrimination Legislation') pages under AIS Services.

Professional Learning

The AIS supports schools to promote student wellbeing through a number of strategies including:

  • Courses and Conferences delivered by the AIS including those focusing on pastoral care, schools counsellors, special education, child protection and PDHPE.  Look under Pastoral Care and/or PDHPE on the Professional Learning page.
  • Consultancies - the AIS conducts customised professional development around student wellbeing on site at schools for their staff.  Contact the Director of Professional Learning for more information.

Management of Specific Incidents

The AIS assists schools to manage specific incidents involving child protection, bullying, harassment, and violent and other unacceptable behaviour to minimise the negative impact on students and school staff from such incidents.  We also assist schools with the development of Health Care Plans.  Principals should contact the AIS on (02) 9299 2845 if they require urgent assistance with any specific incidents.

Funding and Grants

Independent schools can apply for a Student Wellbeing Grant of up to $1500 to conduct projects which support the promotion of student wellbeing and the development of the pastoral capacity within the school.  Click here for 'Student Wellbeing' under Funded Programs.

For advice and assistance about any student health and wellbeing matters, please contact the AIS on (02) 9299 2845.
