Addressing ESL students' needs within the mainstream curriculum 

What is the course about?

This extended course aims to assist teachers of ESL students to better meet the academic needs of students who are learning English as a second or additional language. In particular, it aims to:
  • increase teachers' understanding of the language learning needs of ESL learners, and strategies for meeting those needs
  • increase awareness of how best to use resources, and to address cultural aspects that may enhance learning
  • increase familiarity with using the ESL Scales as a programming, assessment and reporting tool
  • provide strategies for collaboration between and among mainstream teachers, specialist teachers and school executive

How will the course be presented?

The course will be presented in 10 weekly sessions spanning two terms. The course includes: presenter input, discussions, small group activities, videos, class-based research and reading of relevant articles.
