The Early Literacy project aims to promote the explicit teaching of early literacy skills in independent schools. K-2 teachers will be skilled in the administration of an early literacy screening tool that will be used to identify students who require additional support. Teachers will also participate in professional learning that provides evidence-based strategies to inform not only what to teach in terms of early reading concepts, but how best to structure and sequence this learning. The professional learning is supported by instructional coaching sessions to ensure the transfer of these strategies to the classroom context.
The project will support a number of individual schools. Schools are invited to commence the project in Term 4 of each year with ongoing support provided throughout the following year.
