SafeWork NSW has issued a further one year exemption for the audiometric testing requirements of clause 58(2) of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017 (NSW).

The exemption applies for the period 1 January 2019 – 31 December 2019.

What are the audiometric testing requirements?

The Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017 (NSW) provides that regular audiometric testing is required for a worker, who is frequently required to use personal protective equipment (PPE), such as earmuffs, to protect the worker from the risk of hearing loss associated with noise than exceeds the exposure standards for noise.

What do schools need to do?

SafeWork NSW advises that the granting of the exemption does not lessen the PCBU’s legislative duties to control hazardous noise.  Schools should take a proactive approach to ensure the health and safety of workers in loud environments such as workshops and maintenance areas.
