Keynote Speaker - Associate Professor Heather Sharp

Heather Sharp is Associate Professor of History in the School of Education at the University of Newcastle.

Associate Professor Sharp is an education researcher who investigates the teaching of traumatic pasts and the influence of public history in teaching. Her work investigates the intersections of historical consciousness and moral consciousness. Her research has enormous resonance for history educators teaching History in secondary schools.

Associate Professor Sharp’s keynote will examine: Teaching difficult pasts – How does the past influence the present and the future?

Keynote Presenter: Professor Ray Laurence

Ray Laurence is Professor of Roman History and Archaeology in the Department of Ancient History at Macquarie University.

Professor Laurence’s work is based in Archaeology, History and Classics and is characterised by a cross-disciplinary aspect that causes it to be accessible to architects, landscape historians, geographers, and urbanists. His research falls into three key areas: the Roman City; communications and Mobility – especially Roman roads; and age and ageing in the Roman World.

Professor Laurence’s keynote will explore: Looking for Women and Children in Pompeii and Herculaneum: Evidence and Interpretation.
