Lighting the Fire: Building Passion for Sport

Many students traverse through school with a strong and unyielding passion for sport, while the motivation and engagement of other students fluctuates over time. Many schools have vibrant sport programs that are well supported by the school executive and wider school community, while other sport leaders feel the need to constantly advocate for the prominence of sport in the school. How can sport leaders ignite the passion and fan the flames of sport throughout the student journey and within the school community? What can we learn from the practices of other schools and sport professionals, nationally and internationally? The 2024 AISNSW Sport Leadership Conference brings together sport leaders from Independent schools in a professional, intellectual and collegial environment to share, learn and connect with one another.

Keynote Presenter: Stephanie Rudnick

Stephanie Rudnick is a seasoned brand management and communications strategist with over 25 years of experience spanning sports and entertainment. In December 2020, she relocated from NYC to Sydney, Australia, to join dentsu's MKTG, launching its sport PR division. She also leads PR for Angel City Football Club in LA, recently named the most valuable pro women's sports team in the world.

Previously, Rudnick was the head of communications for the startup spring Gridiron league, the XFL. Her career includes roles at MKTG, Wasserman Media Group, Momentum Worldwide, and strategic positions at PMK*BNC, Microsoft, and Edelman.

Dr Katherine Owen

Dr Owen holds a PhD in Public Health and Masters of Biostatistics. She is a Senior Research Fellow and Biostatistician at the University of Sydney, where she leads the SPort & Recreation INTervention & Epidemiology Research (SPRINTER) group. She has extensive experience in physical activity, health promotion, evaluation, and biostatistics. The theme of her research is understanding physical activity and sport trends to increase population level physical activity participation. She partners with many national and state sporting organisations to change the way that the sport sector uses data in practice to inform decision making to increase participation in sport and physical activity.

Keynote Presenter: Dr David Hughes

Dr David Hughes is a Sport and Exercise Medicine physician with over 30 years’ experience working in sports medicine. He is currently Chief Medical Officer of the Australian Institute of Sport and Chair of the Australian Olympic Committee Medical Commission. Dr Hughes has been instrumental in the development and recent release of the Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport.

He is a former President of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians. Key areas of David’s current work includes delivering system-wide protocols to address athlete health/safety and ethical/integrity challenges in sport.

Keynote Presenter: James McBrien

James McBrien spent ten years working in the AFL and NRL at the GWS Giants and Newcastle Knights. His focus there was on the physical development and training load management of athletes, as well as working with football analysts and coaches to find ways to align the gameplan with each player’s physical characteristics. Currently, James is the Head of Sport Intelligence and Technology at the NSW Institute of Sport where he provides data and analytics services to the 15 plus Olympic sports the Institute supports to help athletes prepare for Paris 2024 and beyond.
