K-6 KLA time allocation advice
NESA has just released new advice regarding the time allocation to be given to each area of the primary curriculum. This advice has been designed to support teachers and schools in considering how they can maximise teaching and learning time in a school day, term and year.

The advice includes downloadable material for school leaders and teachers designed to support individual school-based curriculum implementation decisions.
Implementation of new 7-10 Syllabuses
For those seeking guidance about whether it is possible to begin implementing new syllabuses prior to the year of mandatory implementation, NESA has developed this excellent School Registration Fact Sheet.
Schools in the Independent sector implementing new 7-10 syllabuses released in late 2024 have four options in terms of implementation:
- Begin teaching the new syllabus to all year levels in 2026 (i.e. prior to the first year of mandatory implementation)
- Begin teaching the new syllabus to some year levels (e.g. Year 7 and Year 9) in 2026 with implementation for Years 8 and 10 commencing in 2027.
- Begin teaching the new syllabus to all year levels 7-10 in 2027 (the first year of mandatory implementation).
- Begin teaching the new syllabus to Years 7 and 9 in 2027 (the first year of mandatory implementation), with implementation of the new syllabus for Years 8 and 10 commencing in 2028.
Please note that the requirements outlined on the NSW Department of Education website are for schools in the public sector only. Independent schools have greater flexibility, whilst still adhering to NESA requirements.
Release of the new Child Studies 7-10 Syllabus
The new Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus is now available.
Schools can plan and prepare to teach the new Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus from 2025, with mandatory implementation beginning in 2028.
Key features of the new syllabus include:
- Clearer and more streamlined content, allowing teachers to focus on essential learning.
- A strong emphasis on child development, health, safety and wellbeing.
- A focus on students learning to recognise and understand the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Knowledges and Practices for the growth, care and development of children.
- Equitable learning opportunities for students with intellectual disability with the provision of Life Skills outcomes and content.
Schools have access to support materials including teaching advice on the NSW Curriculum website to assist with implementation. More resources will be made available over time.
