At the AISNSW Governance Symposium in 2022, eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant lauded Australia’s water safety as “the best in the world for ensuring our children who live surrounded by water can swim and/or be protected by vigilant adults”.

She then challenged the audience of school leaders to see the imperative for these same children, surrounded by technology, to be explicitly equipped with strategies for responsible technology use and safety and be protected by vigilant adults and legislation.

AISNSW has a strong relationship with the eSafety Commissioner. Schools are encouraged to be a part of Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 7 February and to explore the high-quality advice, research, toolkits and resources from eSafety to support safer and positive experiences online.

While Safer Internet Day is an official global anniversary each year, we acknowledge in schools every day is Safer Internet Day.

There is no more qualified voice than that of Australia’s eSafety Commissioner when schools are marking this annual event, or throughout the year when teaching eSafety as part of the PDHPE K-10 Syllabus and whole-school eSafety strategies.

With the 20-year anniversary of this global initiative, eSafety is calling on Australians to Connect. Reflect. Protect.

Connect safely and with purpose – by keeping apps and devices secure and using social media in positive ways.

Reflect before we act – by taking a moment to consider how what we do and say online may affect others.

Protect ourselves and others by taking action – by telling family, friends or colleagues about eSafety and how we can help.

Schools can get involved with Safer Internet Day by accessing the virtual classroom webinar – Be an eSafe kid: Connect, Reflect. Protect, as well as primary and secondary classroom resources.
