History of AISNSW

The Association of Independent Schools of NSW's history is imbued with championing the mutual concerns and individual rights of Independent schools —primarily their right to autonomy, fair funding and recognition.

The dependence of Government on non-government schools to enrol and educate Australia's baby boomer and European migrant population came to a head in 1962. Yet any official move towards fair, needs-based funding for non-government schools would take another decade—and the Karmel report of 1972.

This history identifies significant moments of change for Independent schools over the last 70 years and the role of AISNSW leadership, influence, advocacy, and strategy in strengthening the sector to be the fastest-growing in NSW.
