Keeping Children and Young People Safe, Together

Child abuse and neglect is one of Australia's greatest social and public health crises.

The inaugural AISNSW Child Protection Conference 2023, Keeping Children and Young People Safe, Together, is an opportunity to bring together a broad range of school staff, practitioners and speakers interested in developing new strategies to manage student's and staff's safety and wellbeing in schools.

The Conference will provide an opportunity to engage with the issues of consent and respectful relationships, ecologically sustainable child protection, vaping in schools and problematic and harmful sexual behaviours. The Conference will assist you in developing a deeper understanding of the approaches needed in schools to identify, manage, and respond to safeguarding concerns while creating a space for thought-provoking engagement with a range of speakers and presenters who are experts in their field, and allow staff in schools to focus on effective child safe practices, not just compliance.

Keynote Presenter: Katrina Marson

Katrina Marson has been researching the protective power of sex-ed to prevent sexual violence and safeguard sexual wellbeing for a decade. She has been a criminal lawyer since 2013, primarily in the area of family violence and sexual offences. On secondment for two years, Katrina led the implementation of the Child Sexual Abuse Royal Commission’s criminal justice recommendations in the ACT before returning to the ACT DPP as a senior prosecutor in the Sexual Offences Unit. 

Katrina is the lead researcher of primary prevention at Rape and Sexual Assault Research and Advocacy and is the President of the Relationships and Sexuality Education Alliance ACT.  

Keynote Presenter: Professor Patrick Parkinson

Professor Patrick Parkinson is an Emeritus Professor of Law at the University of Queensland, where he was Dean from 2018 - 2021. Professor Parkinson is a specialist in family law and child protection. His books include Child Sexual Abuse and the Churches. He authored or co-authored several reports for the Royal Commission on Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. He was also Chairperson of a major review of child protection law which led to the enactment of the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998. He has worked in the past with most major denominations on child protection issues.

Keynote Presenter: Professor Daryl Higgins

Professor Daryl Higgins is the Director of ACU’s Institute of Child Protection Studies. For 30 years, he has been researching child abuse impacts and prevention, public health approaches to protecting children, child-safe organisational strategies– as well as a range of other child and family welfare issues. 

He is a Chief Investigator on a National Health and Medical Research Council grant to conduct the first national study of the prevalence in Australia of child abuse and neglect, and its health outcomes – the Australian Child Maltreatment Study.

Keynote Presenter: Shannon Molloy

Shannon Molloy is an award-winning journalist and author. He was the 2020 recipient of Journalist of the Year at the Mumbrella Publish Awards and is currently the News Editor at realestate.com.au. 

His debut book, Fourteen, a memoir about growing up gay in regional Queensland, is a critically acclaimed bestseller that was turned into a sell-out hit stage production and is now being adapted for the screen. Shannon’s new book is You Made Me This Way.
