Leaving the Shore

To discover new oceans, we must first have the courage to leave the shore.

The highly anticipated Year 11 and 12 Health and Movement Science Syllabus will require new approaches to teaching, learning and assessment. Leaving the Shore will explore health and movement concepts to support teacher confidence in designing learning and assessment that sparks curiosity and critical thinking in their students. Connect with colleagues and experts in the field as new content, depth studies and collaborative investigations are explored through highly respected keynote speakers and interactive workshops. Leaving the Shore will complement planning for syllabus implementation and support facilitation of dynamic learning experiences for students.

This professional learning experience meets the criteria for NESA Accredited PD in the Priority Area of Delivery and Assessment of NSW Curriculum.

Speaker: Dr Stuart Evans

La Trobe University

Stuart is a trained teacher, biomechanist and exercise scientist who lectures in Teacher Education, Physical Education, Sport and Movement at La Trobe University, Victoria. His research involves the quantitative analysis of human movement to enable improvements in function and performance in various sports including triathlon, athletics, ice hockey, cycling, and axe throwing. Join Stuart as he explores the concepts and principles of biomechanics through purposeful and authentic game-based learning to increase teacher confidence with the new Stage 6 Health and Movement Science Syllabus.

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare

Louise is Head of the Population Health Group at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). This Group collects data and reports on the health of Australians, covering population health and disease monitoring. This includes health inequalities, risk factors, international health comparisons, mortality, the burden of disease, and specific chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, musculoskeletal conditions, and respiratory conditions. Join Louise as she shares her extensive experience to unpack the “stories behind the data” as part of the new Stage 6 Health and Movement Science Syllabus.

Advocate for Children and Young People

Zoe is the NSW Advocate for Children and Young People (ACYP). She is passionate about raising the collective voices of children and young people to key decision makers to instigate positive change. ACYP promotes the health and wellbeing of children and young people across NSW, including their participation in the decisions that affect their lives and make recommendations to government and non-government agencies. Join Zoe as she explores how organisations advocate for the health of young people for the new Stage 6 Health and Movement Science Syllabus.

Speaker: Dr Mustafa Sarkar

Nottingham Trent University, England

As an Associate Professor of Sport and Performance Psychology, Dr Sarkar is Head of the Sport Performance Research Group within the SHAPE Research Centre.

His teaching, research and consultancy focuses on the psychology of sporting excellence and he has worked with the Premier League, the English Football Association and various international Olympic Committees. Join Dr Sarkar as he dives into the renewed focus on sports psychology in the new Stage 6 Health and Movement Science Syllabus.
