The Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award 2010 has recently been amended to include a new clause providing regular casual employees the right to request conversion to full-time or part-time employment.
A school can only refuse such requests on reasonable grounds.
These provisions impact a number of independent schools who engage employees covered by the Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award 2010 such as sports coaches.
Schools are required to provide all casual employees with a copy of new provisions in the modern award within the first 12 months of the employee’s first engagement to perform work. In respect of casual employees already employed as at 1 October 2018, an employer must provide such employees with a copy of the new provisions by 1 January 2019.
