Commencing from 1 July 2025, the Australian Government's paid parental leave will increase from 22 to 24 weeks for families who are caring for a newborn or adopted child. The 24-week paid parental leave entitlement is based on a 5-day working week and is paid at the national minimum wage.

Additionally, superannuation payments will be included in the Paid Parental Leave Scheme. Eligible parents with children born or adopted on or after 1 July 2025 will receive an additional payment, based on the Superannuation Guarantee. The Superannuation Guarantee will increase to 12% from 1 July 2025 and will be paid to a nominated superannuation fund.

Under these changes, there will also be changes to the number of days that are reserved for a partner and how many days of paid parental leave can be taken simultaneously.

The Paid Parental Leave Scheme is separate to the paid parental leave entitlements under the Teachers and Professional and Operational Staff Cooperative Multi Enterprise Agreements 2025.

From 1 July 2026, the Paid Parental Leave Scheme will continue to increase, and eligible families will be entitled to receive up to 26 weeks of paid parental leave.
