As part of its ongoing support of road safety education in schools, Transport for NSW has released its popular road safety library bags for distribution to families and students commencing Kindergarten in 2021.

The library bags are designed for children to use at school and are provided to NSW primary schools as part of their Kindergarten Orientation activities. Each bag contains road safety resources and information for families and children.

Starting school is an opportunity to introduce broader road safety messages to support students.

Starting school is not only a critical time for reinforcing key road safety messages that students have been introduced to in early childhood, it is also the opportunity to introduce additional messages to support students and families as they learn to navigate new environments in and around schools. Transport for NSW has identified the following key messages as being of prime importance for Early Stage One students and their families.

Pedestrian Safety

  • Hold a grown-up’s hand when you cross the road
  • Hold a grown-up’s hand when you’re on the footpath
  • Hold a grown-up’s hand when you’re in a carpark

Passenger Safety

  • Click clack, front and back
  • Always buckle up safely
  • Get in and out of the car on the footpath side
  • Wait till the bus has gone and then use a safe place to cross

Safety on Wheels

  • Always wear a helmet when you ride or skate
  • Ride your bike away from the road

The first of these messages is promoted on the front of the library bags.
