School wellbeing approaches—encompassing processes, practices, and pedagogy—represent the actions a school takes to support its community members to develop the capability and capacity to feel well, function well, and feel connected now and into the future (Cross & Lester, 2023). These actions include universal strategies that promote positive mental health and wellbeing for all students, as well as early intervention and targeted supports.
The most effective way to enhance student wellbeing is through the implementation of a comprehensive, whole-school approach. Outlined below are the key components of such an approach. For each component, a ‘Spotlight’ resource is available, offering:
- A summary
- An overview of impact
- Examples of best practices
- Resource recommendations
These Spotlights are valuable tools for wellbeing teams when reviewing and planning a school's approach to wellbeing.
Drawing on these components and a structured implementation process, AISNSW provides support to schools in establishing new or strengthening existing whole-school strategies tailored to the unique mental health and wellbeing needs of their community.
